Retrofitting:
As the name implies, it means modifying machine equipment to achieve the following:
(1) Performance improvement
(2) Energy saving
Retrofitting non-heated (heatless) dryers:
- Non-heated (heatless) dryers were clean equipment widely used in the technology industry of the old era. Initially, due to their lower purchase cost, smaller equipment size, less space occupied, and simple structural design and control principles, they were widely applied in various electronics and technology factories. However, with the rapid development of technology and the gradual emergence of environmental issues, the extremely high air consumption of non-heated dryers, despite their lower purchase cost, resulted in alarmingly high subsequent operating costs and a relatively severe impact on the environment.
- Example: Assuming inlet conditions of 100 PSIG pressure and a temperature below 30℃, with a standard where the unit cost of CDA and electricity charges are in a 10% ratio. It is estimated that retrofitting a non-heated (heatless) dryer into a heated dryer can achieve energy savings of over 40%. The lower the inlet temperature (moisture content), the better the energy-saving effect. If combined with a refrigerated dryer, an excellent energy-saving effect of over 80% can be achieved.
- Concerns about retrofitting non-heated (heatless) dryers:
(1) The price difference between retrofitting the machine and purchasing a new one is not significant, resulting in poor benefits.
(2) There is a concern that pressure drop will increase and regeneration time will be insufficient after the model change.
(3) Differences in design methods may create operational safety concerns. - The above concerns often make users hesitate. Here, we reiterate that the business of retrofitting machines is more challenging than manufacturing new ones. If this business is entrusted to a team without its own technology and unfamiliar with various manufacturers' products, the risk will relatively increase, and it should never be attempted rashly.
- When a technical team with its own technology and sufficient accumulated experience undertakes a retrofitting project, it must provide an evaluation report including price factors, energy-saving recovery benefits, safety explanations, etc., communicate with the user, and execute only after confirming that there are no errors and setting verification standards.
A conscientious and responsible technical team, when there are concerns about performance or safety, should truthfully inform the user and should never prioritize taking on business. This is to encourage our fellow professionals.
